Our records indicate that in 1885 the first Frensham &amp; Churt Flower Show took place and apart from the two World Wars, they took place in most years. Up until the First World War, they were held alternately in Frensham (at Pierrepont, home to the Coombe Family) and Churt.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 1947 Frensham Flower Show, the committee decided to retire and on 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0January 1948, an advert was placed in the Farnham Herald to advertise that a public meeting was to be held at the Marindin Hall, Frensham on Monday 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0February 1948,\u00a0\u00a0to set up a new Horticultural Society. Under the name of Frensham Horticultural and Produce Society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1948-January-23rd-Crop-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2417\" width=\"432\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1948-January-23rd-Crop-1.jpg 432w, https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1948-January-23rd-Crop-1-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Rowland Hill, the\u00a0\u00a0man\u00a0\u00a0behind\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0idea\u00a0\u00a0was\u00a0\u00a0elected\u00a0\u00a0as\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0societies\u00a0 first Chairman,\u00a0\u00a0with Alfie Stevens, elected as its first President.\u00a0 Madame Huitfeldt of Hollowdene House, along with Mr Steven\u2019s wife, Mary, were the volunteer secretaries. The names of our first president and lady secretaries, are forever engraved into the fabric of the societies history, due to the cups,\u00a0\u00a0they kindly donated to the society.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0The Society arranged for their first show to be held at Hollowdene Recreation,  followed by shows in the Autumn and Spring. The society held three shows for many years. The Spring and Autumn shows were held at Easeway, the home of founder member Edward Hunter, until the late 1970&#8217;s. In the summer show of 1954, there were over 600 entries and the society had over 200 members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gardening continued to be popular and the societies shows, in particular, the Summer show, which was the main village event of the year and included side shows and entertainment. After the death of Edward Hunter, his daughter Eileen Petrovitch, inherited his house, Easeway&#8217; and renamed it in his honour &#8216;Hunters&#8217;, where the shows continued to be held until 1978. They then reverted back to the Marindin Hall, Frensham, where they are still held today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Presidents Supper<\/strong> was held for the first time on 7<sup>th<\/sup> October 1977, the society held its first Presidents Supper, a tradition that is still held today, but renamed in 2021 as the &#8216;Members Supper&#8217;. These entries were not bettered all decade. At the 1991 spring show, Frances Hacker, the Society Chairman, commented that it was down to the fine weather and judge George Goring, said &#8216;the number of entries and excellent standard meant the show could equal any in the district&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our 60th Anniversary <\/strong>was celebrated in 2008, with perhaps less members than in the 1950&#8217;s and 1960&#8217;s, but the occasion was attended by over 100 members,  held at the home of  long term members Jane and Jeremy Spurling&#8217;s in Dockenfield.  Former President and Chairman, Barbara Machin-Cooke, agreed to cut the cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/P1010208.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/P1010208.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/P1010208-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/P1010208-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fdhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/P1010208-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>                                                                  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> In 2005, and after 57 years of tradition, to reflect the rising number of members  that lived in Dockenfield, it was decided at that years AGM to change the society name to <strong>Frensham &amp; Dockenfield Horticultural Society.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Autumn show of <strong>2021<\/strong>, attracted over 300 entries, making it the most successful Autumn Show, since 1979.
